Essential Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Full sun is crucial, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

  • Temperature: Peppers are warm-season crops.
Soil temperature should be 70-80°F for germination, with daytime air temperatures of 70-85°F for optimal growth.

  • Water: Consistent moisture is necessary, roughly 1 inch of water per week, especially during hot, dry periods. Overwatering can cause root rot, but they need regular hydration.

  • Soil & Nutrients: Use well-drained, fertile soil. In containers, use a high-quality potting mix.

  • Fertilizer: As heavy feeders, fertilize every 2-4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer, or one designed for tomatoes.

  • Space & Support: Space plants 12-18 inches apart. Use stakes or cages to support plants, particularly when they are loaded with fruit.

  • Containers: If planting in pots, use a 3-5 gallon container, at least 12 inches deep.
