Permanent Year-Round Position:
Manager of Out of School and preschool Programs
STARTING PAY RATE: $19 - $22/hour (depending upon qualifications) plus paid time off and 90% paid healthcare coverage
HOURS: 30 hours weekly, year-round
Year Round
On Site: Weekdays during programming (Garden Club and scheduled Preschool & After School field trips)
Summer
On Site: All Day Weekdays for Summer Camp
March - October
On Site: Saturdays approximately 8am – 12:30 pm (approximately two Saturdays per month)
Additional hours on site, as needed and with flexibility to balance personal and organizational needs; additional office hours from home.
PROGRAM LEADERSHIP - 80%
Oversee program development the following areas:
Summer Camp (4-6 weeks)
Garden Club afterschool program (3-4 weekly sessions)
Afterschool and Summer group field trips
Year-round Preschool field trips
Additional programming based on Manager interest
Teach select school visits in collaboration with Manager of School and Teen Programs
Plan, lead and engage children in garden-based activities that support Ohio learning outcomes in math, science, language arts, visual arts, health and nutrition.
Maintain regular contact with parents of children in HYG programming in order to increase attendance and collaborate on student well being.
Use guidance of nationally recognized gardening and nutrition curriculum that ties to Ohio curriculum standards. Create unique curriculum materials for Highland Youth Garden that can inspire others in the field.
Develop garden-based programs that support developmental stages of childhood growth.
Develop garden-based programs that support learning differences and are cognizant of trauma-informed care.
Ensure all programming has an evaluation component that solicits input from direct participants and community partners. Evaluation results should demonstrate impact and be useful for future program planning and fundraising.
Supervise volunteers and part time/temporary staff who will support Summer Camp and Garden Club activities.
TEAM PARTICIPATION - 10%
Partners with the Garden Manager on the outreach, planning, promoting, staffing, installation and mentorship of Family Gardens.
Staffs 2-3 Garden Markets/month (including Saturdays)
Plans and leads one seasonal festival/year.
Support other team members in education, gardening, safety and facility needs.
Represent Highland Youth Garden positively and support our mission in all interactions.
Communicate via email, text messages and in-person regarding education plans to HYG staff, volunteers, and Board.
Mentor youth employees.
Support community outreach projects to promote educational programming.
Provide stories and photos for social media.
Attend bi-monthly HYG board meetings and HYG Programming Committee meetings.
Seek out opportunities to participate in and contribute to community initiatives on the Hilltop and in the greater Columbus gardening/urban farming communities.
Ensures expenditures are properly documented and fall within the HYG annual budget.
SUPERVISION AND REPORTING
The Manager of Out of School and Family Program’s supervisor is the HYG Executive Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
A passion for growing community and impacting others.
Self-directed and flexible work style.
Leadership abilities and strong communication skills.
Desire to continuously develop skills and seek out new opportunities to help grow the organization’s impact.
Experience working with children grades PK-12 in a formal or informal setting.
Classroom behavior management skills.
Experience planning and organizing activities for children.
Knowledge of horticulture/agriculture through either formal or informal experiences.
Cooking skills in the home and/or professional setting.
Strong cultural competency skills and familiarity with trauma informed care methods.
Experience with personal use of social media.
Spanish language skills are a bonus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and simultaneously supervise a variety of tasks.
Ability to stand, walk, stoop, reach and bend.
Mobility of arms to reach.
Dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate large and small objects.
Ability to lift, push and/or pull objects that may weigh approximately 50 pounds.
Ability to work in outdoor weather conditions, including full sun and high temperatures.
Upon acceptance of position, ability to pass a complete background check.
