Position

POSITION: Executive Director

COMPENSATION: $20-$25/hr

HOURS: Part time; 20 hours per week

REPORTS TO: Highland Youth Garden Board

 

Description

LEADERSHIP - OUTREACH - COMMUNICATION

  • Serve as the face of Highland Youth Garden (HYG) and primary point of contact for the outside community (including government officials, donors, Hilltop neighbors and community leaders, school leadership, community gardening partners)

  • Represent HYG proactively and positively in pursuit of support of our mission and organizational goals

  • Coordinate communications via email, text messages and in-person with and among Lead Gardener, Lead Educator, Board, and partners

  • Coordinate email updates to volunteers via Mail Chimp as necessary and appropriate

  • Recruit and coordinate volunteers and volunteer groups in collaboration with Lead Educator and Lead Gardener

  • Attend monthly HYG Board meetings

HUMAN CAPITAL MANAGEMENT

  • Serve as a team leader, support and supervise staff, provide guidance to staff, join one class per week and attend key volunteer days

  • Research employment models for Garden staff and prepare a recommendation for Board

  • Establish and maintain a relationship with employer of record firm

  • Retain employee files and records

  • Hiring of new HYG team members

  • Coordinate employee payroll and bookkeeping with third party vendor or Board

  • Facilitate reimbursement requests and organize reimbursements

  • Fulfill support tasks as requested by the Lead Gardener or Lead Educator

ORGANIZATION DEVELOPMENT AND GRANT MANAGEMENT

  • Serve as lead in coordinating, preparing, and submitting Garden grant applications

  • Identify and vigorously pursue potential HYG funding sources and new funding platforms

  • Prepare and distribute tax donation letters for partners and donors

  • Monitor Garden work to ensure compliance with grant-mandated outcomes

  • Draft and submit grant reports that accurately reflect Garden activities and satisfy all grant requirements and deadlines

  • Track expenditures from the HYG bank account and identify the corresponding grant fund for such expenditures

  • Coordinate in-kind donations from partners

  • Implement creative and meaningful methods of expressing gratitude to donors and partners

  • Maintain organization’s files, assets, archives and database (Google Drive)

 

Qualifications

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

  • A passion for growing community and positively impacting others

  • Outstanding moral and ethical character

  • Established history of leadership in the community

  • Persuasive oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated supervisory abilities

  • Proficiency in grant writing and management

  • Self directed attitude and ability to tackle tasks with minimal instruction

  • Proven track record of fostering relationships with local leaders, organizational partners, and potential funding sources

  • Engaging and outgoing demeanor that can interact with people from diverse backgrounds and viewpoints

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic knowledge of horticulture/agriculture particularly vegetable production through either formal or informal experiences

  • Background in educational instruction and/or administration

  • Demonstrated interest and ability to work in the best interest of children

  • Fundamental understanding of the health and education challenges facing unprivileged communities

  • Sound bookkeeping and record keeping capabilities

 

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Flexible hours and occasional Saturday hours

  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions

  • Simultaneously supervise a variety of tasks

  • Ability to read small print

  • Ability to stand for long periods

  • Ability to sit for long periods

  • Ability to work in outdoor weather conditions, including full sun and high temperatures

  • Upon acceptance of position, complete background check

  • Office space available near the Garden; flexibility in working at home.
